On Sunday, 20 March, the day after the Annual Meeting of Surrey Mark Masons, Kevin Woodward found himself in the grounds of Hampton Court in readiness for running the Palace Half Marathon. The chilly morning had not deterred runners as some 3308 massed at the start line.
Henry VIII stood outside his residence and wished us well. All too soon the call for Wave 1 runners to gather at the warmup zone was announced, shortly after which the countdown started, and we were off.
The day was beautiful with temperatures perfect for running. Kevin was wearing the colours of his running club, the Epsom Oddballs, which were the same as those of the Ukrainian flag. This felt most appropriate remembering the fantastic work the MBF was doing for the Ukrainian relief effort and that this run was in support of the MBF.
The route was very picturesque and reasonably flat. From Hampton Court they ran to Kingston Bridge, crossed the river, and ran down to Esher Station. From there, over Hampton Bridge and back to Kingston Bridge.
This time they turned away from Kingston Bridge and entered the Grounds of Hampton Court and, after several more kilometres, crossed the finish line. Two of Kevin’s Grandchildren were ready at the finish line waving their banners. Final chip time for his Half Marathon was 1 Hr 36 min and 51 sec.
